Senegal: Here are the reasons for the postponement of the presidential elections on February 25, 2024.

Senegalese President Macky Sall announced on January 3, 2024, in Dakar, the postponement of the presidential elections scheduled for February 25, 2024. Several factors have motivated this decision, including the inclusion of a dual national candidate on the list of candidates and the crisis shaking the country’s political institutions.

In a video broadcasted on social networks, the head of state reaffirmed his position not to run in the next presidential election. He emphasized his intention to guarantee credible, transparent, and peaceful elections to preserve the country’s stability.

This announcement came after the Senegalese National Assembly established a parliamentary commission on January 31, 2024, to investigate allegations concerning two judges accused of rejecting the candidacy of Karim Wade, who is considered a dual national.

This decision has sparked protests and opposition from some Senegalese citizens who believe it could undermine democratic principles and equal opportunities among candidates.

Facing this climate of tension and in order to ensure a peaceful electoral process, President Macky Sall has made the decision to postpone the date of the presidential elections.

This postponement aims to allow for the proper resolution of ongoing disputes and to create a conducive environment for free and transparent elections.

Senegal, a model country for its political stability and peaceful transitions of power in West Africa, has recently been marred by the judicial case of Ousmane Sonko.

By making this decision to postpone the elections, President Macky Sall demonstrates his willingness to preserve this democratic tradition and maintain citizens’ trust in the electoral system.

The new electoral calendar will be announced soon, and it is hoped that this decision will restore confidence and ease the political tensions that persist in the country. By ensuring fair and transparent elections, Senegal can continue to position itself as a model of democracy in West Africa.
