During his address to the United Nations General Assembly, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered sharp criticism towards the UN, accusing the international body of being powerless in resolving conflicts, particularly regarding the war in Ukraine.
Zelensky emphasized that the existing mechanisms, especially the structure of the UN Security Council, often make it difficult to make fair and honest decisions. According to him, this situation is worsened by the veto power held by certain permanent members of the Council, which creates blockages in urgent situations. He stated: « Unfortunately, it is impossible to resolve matters of war and peace fairly and honestly at the UN because many things depend on the Security Council and its veto power. »
A Peace Formula
As part of his speech, Zelensky also reiterated the importance of his peace formula, which he supports as a viable means to end the conflict with Russia. He claimed that this approach has a major advantage: « because it has no veto power. » This implies an inclusive approach, potentially less subject to conflicting political interests.
